Philip Bown, a highly experienced criminal and fraud barrister, has been appointed full time in-house counsel with the Business Defence department at leading specialist law firm Cartwright King.

Having been head of Chambers in Birmingham and Leicester, Philip joined the Criminal Defence team at Cartwright King in 2010 to enable the firm to provide continuity of representation for clients from police station through to Crown Court.

Following the expansion of the firm's business defence department, Cartwright King now has a team of 30 specialist fraud lawyers dealing with cases across the Midlands, Yorkshire and the North. this growth means that the business defence team can support, and reap the benefits of, dedicated in-house counsel.

The team in turn can also call on its 17-strong Higher Court Advocacy team which represents clients in Crown Court and the Court of Appeal - effectively the firm's own in house barristers' chambers.

Philip will now be providing advice, preparing defences and representing clients of the firm's offices. He will be an integral part of the case team and readily accessible to clients at all stages of the judicial process whilst still retaining his professional independence.

Having a barrister as part of the defence team provides distinct advantages for the firm's clients. This includes close tactical control, a team approach to analysing evidence and preparing the defence, focused and prompt instruction taking and unrestricted access to their barrister.

"The old fashioned approach of the barrister being distant, aloof and unapproachable reachable is simply not acceptable," said Mark Wilson, head of Business Defence at Cartwright King. "Our clients want to be able to phone or email anyone on the team who is working on their case including their barrister and get an answer straight away. This way, clients are fully covered with a tight team fighting for them and all under one roof."

Cartwright King is now recruiting for additional barristers to join the firm's Business Defence team.
